UNC-Charlotte Chemistry

UNC Charlotte

is located in a growing, multicultural community. Our Chemistry department of 21 faculty members supports vigorous and externally funded academic research. Analytical facilities within the department are maintained by two Ph.D. chemists, and two electronics technicians.

Research is emphasized in our Master of Science degree. Consequently our graduates are well prepared for a variety of career choices. Many of our students are accepted into the most competitive Ph.D. programs. Others choose this program to promote their industrial career opportunities.

We pride ourselves on the collegial atmosphere among our students and faculty advisors. Our small size enables a personable one-on-one educational experience. This two-year program supports its students through graduate fellowships and assistantships.

Prof. Gary Howard Portrait

Gary Howard received his B.A. in 1964 at Doane College and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of Nebraska in 1970. He joined the Chemistry Department at UNC Charlotte in 1974 and taught in the areas of analytical and general chemistry. Gary was director of our General Chemistry Program and provided strong leadership until his untimely death. Gary's efforts were aimed at seeking ways to improve student learning, identify and provide tutorial support for high-risk students, bring standardization to the instructional program and incorporate information technology into the curriculum. Gary was esteemed by his colleagues for his modesty and integrity.
